How Music Can Calm Anxiety Before Surgery

Feeling anxious before surgery is something many people experience. For some, it starts a few days before their procedure. For others, it peaks right before heading into the operating room. It’s a deeply human reaction — and one that I’ve felt personally.

When I Became the Patient

As a plastic surgeon at Oregon Cosmetic and Reconstructive Clinic, I’ve guided many patients through their surgical journeys. But when I was the one preparing for an elective surgery — a procedure I had performed countless times — I was surprised by how strong my own anxiety felt.

When it came time to lie on the operating table, that familiar clinical setting suddenly felt very different. My surgery went smoothly, and I recovered well. Yet, that moment changed how I understood what my patients go through. It reminded me that behind every operation is a very human experience.

Why Anxiety Happens Before Surgery

Our minds and bodies naturally react to the idea of surgery. Even when we trust our surgeon and know the procedure is safe, uncertainty can create stress. Common feelings include:

Racing thoughts

Tension or restlessness

Faster heart rate

Trouble sleeping the night before

While medications can help reduce this anxiety, many patients prefer to try calming, non-drug methods first. One of the most effective — and simplest — tools we have is music.

The Calming Power of Music

Music affects more than just our emotions. Studies have shown that listening to calming music can decrease anxiety and pain.

In one study, patients were randomly assigned to either listen to music for 20 minutes through headphones before surgery or sit quietly without music. The group who listened to music reported significantly lower anxiety levels compared to those who did not.

My Recommendation: Choose Music That Grounds You

I usually suggest music that feels relaxing and lets you focus on the present moment. Everyone’s taste is different, but slower rhythms and gentle melodies tend to calm the body’s natural stress response.

One specific piece, “Weightless” by Marconi Union, has even been shown in research to lower anxiety and heart rate. It’s a great choice to play while you wait before surgery or even at home in the days leading up to it.

Bringing Calm Into Your Surgical Experience

At Oregon Cosmetic and Reconstructive Clinic, we understand that surgery isn’t just about the procedure — it’s about your comfort, trust, and peace of mind. Preparing with small steps, like choosing music that relaxes you, can make a meaningful difference in how you experience your surgical day and recovery.

Even a few minutes of music can help you breathe a little easier, lower your heart rate, and step into surgery feeling calmer and more centered.
