Whether you feel neck and back pain, difficulty with physical activity, or self-consciousness about your breast size, Dr. Tina Jenq provides expert surgical care to achieve a more balanced, proportionate chest. We proudly serve Portland, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, Clackamas, Gresham, West Linn, and beyond.

What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create a smaller, more proportionate breast size.  As a result, women often notice a remarkable relief of  back pain, neck strain, and posture, as the breasts are lifted and made more proportional.

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

  • Relief from Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pain – Reduce strain caused by large, heavy breasts.
  • Improved Posture – Lighter breasts can help improve spinal alignment and posture.
  • Enhanced Physical Activity – Enjoy a more active lifestyle with greater ease and comfort.
  • Better Clothing Fit – Achieve a more balanced body proportion for improved wardrobe options.
  • Boost in Confidence – Feel more comfortable and confident in your body.

Breast Reduction Techniques

  • Crescent Reduction – Mildly lift the breast and areola with a scar hidden around the areola.
  • Vertical (Lollipop) Reduction – Removes excess tissue and reshapes the breast for a natural contour.
  • Anchor Reduction – This technique centralizes and elevates the breast, with powerful contouring of the “side boob.”

What to Expect from Breast Reduction Portland OR Surgery

  1. Consultation – After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Tina Jenq listens to your concerns and offers treatment options.  She also estimates the amount of weight in reduction based upon your aesthetic and functional goals.
  2. Surgery –  Typically, patients go home the same day after an outpatient surgery under general anesthesia.
  3. No drains – Quilting sutures prevent accumulation of excess fluid, so drains are almost never needed with surgery.   In addition, quilting sutures reset the position and contour the breast and chest wall to prevent recurrence of excess fullness of the sides of the chest.
  4. Recovery – Initial healing takes about 1-2 weeks, with full results developing over several months.
  5. Results – Lighter, proportionate breasts allow you to move with ease with relief from pain

What Sets Our Practice Apart

Choosing a surgeon is an important decision—and we believe you deserve to know who will be performing your procedure. At our clinic, Dr. Jenq performs every part of the surgery herself, from start to finish. Unlike some practices where surgical tasks may be delegated to trainees, residents, or surgical technicians, your care will never be passed off to someone else. This direct attention not only supports safety and consistency but ensures that your experience is truly individualized.

Another key benefit of our approach is that we do not use surgical drains. Many patients are relieved to learn this, as drains can be uncomfortable and can prolong recovery. With advanced quilting suture techniques, Dr. Jenq  minimizes fluid buildup to support a smoother healing process—without the need for external drains.

Additionally, all of our surgeries are performed as outpatient procedures, meaning you’ll go home the same day. Most surgeries are completed in four hours, and patients can typically return to light daily activities within a week. We understand the importance of clear recovery expectations and are here to support you through every phase.

What is the breast reduction cost?

  • The cost of breast reduction surgery changes depending on whether you’re going through insurance or paying out of pocket.
  • If you’re going through insurance, we’ll first help you get prior authorization. If it’s approved, our office will then work with your insurance provider to give you a detailed estimate based on your specific coverage.
  • If you choose self-pay, breast reduction costs on average around $12,000. But this can change based on your unique needs and the length of surgery. We will walk you through the process and answer any questions you might have!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is breast cancer screening performed?

If you're over 40 or have any risk factors for breast cancer, we recommend having a screening mammogram within a year before your surgery. During breast reduction, the tissue we remove is always sent to a pathologist to ensure everything looks healthy—which is a standard part of your care. After surgery, we usually recommend getting a new “baseline” mammogram around six months later. This is helpful because the breast reduction can slightly change how things appear on future mammograms. Having this updated scan gives your doctor a clear point of comparison for your ongoing breast health. Of course, it’s important to continue with regular mammogram screenings as recommended by your primary care provider or OB-GYN.

Will my insurance cover this procedure?

Some insurance plans do cover breast reduction surgery, especially when it’s being done to help with symptoms like back or neck pain, rashes, shoulder grooving, or difficulty with physical activity. Coverage is often based on the severity of symptoms and the estimated amount of breast tissue to be removed. Since each plan is different, many require preauthorization—and our office will help guide you through that process step by step. If insurance doesn’t provide coverage, we’re happy to discuss out-of-pocket options and provide you with a detailed cost estimate so you can make an informed decision that’s right for you.

Can I breastfeed after surgery?

Yes—about 80% of women who wish to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery are able to do so. During surgery, I take special care to preserve the structures that support breastfeeding whenever possible. That said, some women may find that their milk supply isn’t quite enough for exclusive breastfeeding and may choose to supplement with formula. If breastfeeding is important to you, we’ll talk about it during your consultation so we can tailor your surgical plan accordingly. After surgery, if you choose to breastfeed, I’m happy to connect you with trusted lactation consultants in the Portland area, including providers at Legacy Health and Providence, who specialize in supporting women after breast surgery. These resources can make a meaningful difference as you navigate feeding options and reach your breastfeeding goals.

Is a breast lift included in a breast reduction?

A breast lift is included as part of breast reduction surgery. During the procedure, the areola is typically made smaller and repositioned to a more youthful, lifted position. In addition to reducing the overall breast volume, the tissue is reshaped to bring the breast mound into a more centralized position on the chest wall—away from the armpit area. This helps create a more balanced, natural contour and often improves both comfort and appearance.

Will you deal with my "side boob"?

Absolutely—yes, we do address that! In a breast reduction, the excess fullness on the sides of the breasts, often called "side boob," is carefully reduced and smoothed out. I also reshape and reposition the remaining tissue so that the breast sits more centrally on the chest. The goal is a more lifted, balanced contour that feels lighter and looks more proportionate, both from the front and the sides. It’s all part of creating a result that not only looks great in clothing but feels more comfortable in your body.

What factors improve the chances that insurance will cover breast reduction surgery?

Great question! Insurance coverage for breast reduction surgery often depends on how much the breasts are impacting your health and daily life. To improve the chances of approval, it’s helpful to have documentation of the following: Chronic pain in the neck, shoulders, or upper back that hasn’t improved with things like pain medication, physical therapy, or chiropractic care Skin irritation or rashes under the breasts that keep coming back, even after using creams or keeping the area clean and dry Limited ability to exercise or do certain activities because of the weight or discomfort of your breasts Use of supportive bras or compression garments that haven’t relieved symptoms Having this kind of medical history shows that the surgery is not just for appearance—it’s to help treat ongoing, medically significant issues. If you're unsure what to gather or how to start, we’re happy to guide you through the process!
