What is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump that usually forms near a joint or tendon. It often appears on the back of the wrist, palm side, or fingers. Initially, these cysts form through a weak or worn-down spot in the joint capsule or tendon sheath. Eventually as you move your hand, pressure builds up in the joint and pushes a small outpouching through that weak spot.
The cyst wall may enlarge over time. It can feel tight, tender, or even burst. Although not cancerous, ganglion cysts sometimes interfere with daily activities.
How is it Treated?
The best treatment is surgery to remove the cyst wall completely. Dr. Jenq also removes the stalk or root of the cyst. A small opening removes the weak area of the joint or tendon sheath. This helps the body heal and close the space, lowering the chance of the cyst coming back.
What to Expect with Surgery
Surgery takes place in the operating room to reduce the risk of infection. Most patients receive sedation, which means you’re sleepy and relaxed but still breathing on your own. You likely won’t remember the procedure.
You’ll go home the same day. No splint is needed. A soft bandage is placed over the hand. You can start using your fingers gently the next day for light activity. Stitches are usually removed after 2 weeks.
The hand may feel slightly weak for a few weeks. As you return to activity, it’s normal to feel occasional twinges of pain with certain movements. These usually last just a few seconds and improve over time.
