Gynecomastia Surgery in Portland Metro Oregon
Male Breast Reduction by Dr. Tina Jenq
What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition where males develop extra breast tissue. It can happen on one or both sides of the chest. Often for many people, this causes embarrassment, discomfort, or difficulty wearing certain clothing.
At Oregon Cosmetic and Reconstructive Clinic, we offer expert surgical care to help you feel more confident in your appearance.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia can occur at any age and may be caused by:
-
Hormone changes (especially low testosterone or high estrogen)
-
Certain medications or supplements
-
Use of steroids or marijuana
-
Weight gain or obesity
-
Medical conditions such as liver, kidney, or thyroid problems
- Most often however, gynecomastia occurs idiopathically, meaning not from any defined disease
Workup Starts With Your Primary Care Provider
Before considering surgery, it’s important to understand why the breast tissue developed. The initial workup for gynecomastia should be done by your primary care provider (PCP).
Your PCP may:
-
Do a physical exam
-
Check your medication and supplement list
-
Order blood tests to check hormone levels
-
Refer you for imaging (like ultrasound or mammogram) if needed
If your provider rules out underlying medical causes and the tissue does not go away with time or medication, they may refer you to us to explore surgical treatment options.
Gynecomastia Surgery Options
Surgery is often the best treatment when the extra tissue is permanent or bothersome. The right procedure depends on how much tissue and skin you have.
1. Liposuction Only
-
Best for mild cases caused by fatty tissue
-
Uses a small tube to suction out fat
-
Small incision and fast recovery
2. Subcutaneous Mastectomy
-
Removes firm glandular tissue beneath the nipple
-
Incision placed around the edge of the areola
3. Mastectomy with Free Nipple Graft
-
Used for larger or more severe cases
-
Extra breast tissue and skin are removed
-
Nipple is replaced as a skin graft in a flatter, more natural spot on the chest
4. Mastectomy with Skin Removal
-
For patients with loose or sagging skin
-
Skin and tissue removed in an elliptical shape
-
Scar is placed along the bottom border of the chest muscle for a clean look
What to Expect from Surgery
-
Surgery is done under general anesthesia
-
It’s an outpatient procedure, so you go home the same day
-
Most surgeries take 2-3 hours
-
A compression garment is worn after surgery to reduce swelling and shape the chest
Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery
-
Most patients return to light activities in 5 days
-
Back to work in about 2 weeks (depending on your job)
-
Avoid heavy lifting and chest workouts for 4–6 weeks
-
Swelling and tightness improve over several weeks
-
Final results become more noticeable as the chest heals
