Implants for Breast Surgery

In 2010, almost 300,000 cosmetic breast augmentation surgeries were performed in the United States.  The popularity of this procedure is due to the overall high satisfaction of women who decide to proceed with surgery. However, it is important for you to be certain if this is what you really want, as implants may require additional future surgeries for maintenance of their optimal appearance.

There are different techniques of surgery.  The implants can be placed under the chest muscle or directly under the breast gland.  The scar can be placed at the breast fold, the nipple, the belly button, or the armpit.  Many surgeons use the breast fold area as it is quite accessible to create the implant pocket, and scars in this location generally heal quite well.

There are also different options for size and shape of the implants.  Typically, the larger the volume of implant, the wider the diameter.  However, there are also different implant heights, which translate to taller height being smaller in diameter.  The best implant depends on your chest wall size and natural shape of your breasts. For example, if you have a petite body frame and narrower breasts, a smaller volume or higher profile implant may fit you better.  To maintain a natural appearance, it is important to choose a size that remains proportional to your body.
