How long is tummy tuck recovery, week by week?
Quick answer
Most people return to daily activities 3 to 4 weeks after a tummy tuck. You can shower on day 3, go back to a remote desk job after about a week and drive at about 3 weeks. Lifting over 10 pounds and core work wait until about 6 weeks, and swelling keeps improving for several months.
Tummy tuck recovery week by week follows a fairly steady pattern. Most people return to daily activities in 3 to 4 weeks, start light cardio after 2 weeks, and wait until about 6 weeks for lifting and core exercise. Swelling and tightness keep easing for months after that.
Here is what each stage usually looks like, based on how Dr. Jenq, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, guides her tummy tuck patients. Your own plan may differ, and Dr. Jenq will tell you what fits your surgery.
What happens on the day of a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck takes about 3 to 4 hours under general anesthesia, and most people go home the same day. Occasionally, an overnight stay is needed.
During surgery, Dr. Jenq repairs separated abdominal muscles, removes loose skin and fat, and places the scar low along the bikini line. In a full tummy tuck, the belly button is repositioned. She performs every step herself. You can read more about the procedure on the tummy tuck page.
What is the first week of tummy tuck recovery like?
The first week is about rest, short walks and managing discomfort. Walking can start the day after surgery.
- Pain: expect prescription pain medicine for about 5 days, then over-the-counter relief.
- Posture: staying slightly bent at the waist early on takes strain off the incision.
- Tightness: your belly will feel tight. That is expected, because the muscles were repaired and extra skin was removed.
- Compression: a binder goes on at the end of surgery. After 1 week, you switch to shapewear, which you wear for 6 weeks.
- Showering: you can shower on the third day after surgery.
- Energy: some tiredness is normal and can last 2 to 3 weeks.
Will I have drains after a tummy tuck?
You may not need drains. Dr. Jenq closes with quilting (progressive tension) sutures, which reduce fluid buildup and lessen the need for drains. How quilting sutures work explains the technique.
If you do have drains, a small tube connects to a soft bulb that gently removes fluid as you heal.
- You empty the bulb and record the amount several times a day.
- The drain comes out in the clinic once it drains 30 cc or less in 24 hours for two days in a row.
- Removal takes only a few seconds. It can feel strange, but it is usually not painful, and the team walks you through it.
What can I do at weeks 2 and 3 after a tummy tuck?
After 2 weeks, you can usually add light cardio and gentle movement.
- Brisk walking or light jogging
- Lower-body yoga
Keep lifting to 10 pounds or less and avoid any core work. Tiredness usually fades during this stretch, since it tends to last 2 to 3 weeks.
When can I drive and go back to work after a tummy tuck?
Most people can drive at about 3 weeks. Before you drive, you need to be able to turn and react quickly in an emergency, which is hard while your abdomen is still tight and sore.
Going back to a desk job depends on the kind of job:
- Working from home with some flexibility: about 7 days, especially if you can rest when you are tired.
- In-person or higher-stress desk job: 2 to 3 weeks.
Lifting more than 10 pounds is still off limits until about 6 weeks, so plan help for anything heavy at home or at work.
When can I return to daily activities after a tummy tuck?
Most people return to daily activities in 3 to 4 weeks. Dr. Jenq sees you at follow-up visits 2 days, 1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months and 1 year after surgery to check how you are healing.
Even when you feel ready for normal routines, the lifting and core limits still apply until about 6 weeks.
When can I lift weights and do core exercise again?
At about 6 weeks, weight lifting and crunches can start. Before then, avoid lifting more than 10 pounds and any core work, because the repaired abdominal muscles need time to heal.
How long do swelling and tightness last?
Swelling keeps improving over several months. Tightness can also last several months, or up to one to two years if the muscles were very stretched. Swelling and firmness after surgery explains why healing tissue changes over time.
Most scars respond well to the scar care Dr. Jenq recommends. If a scar stays thick, raised or red, steroid or 5-FU injections, or CO2 laser treatment, can soften and flatten it.
When to see a surgeon
- You have loose skin and fat on your abdomen that diet and exercise haven’t changed, often after pregnancy, weight changes or aging
- Your abdominal muscles have separated (rectus diastasis)
- You have a stretched or hidden belly button, or stretch marks on the lower abdomen
- You want to plan time off and help at home around a 3 to 4 week return to daily activities
